| Admin/Biographical History | On December 29, 1902, the farmers near Minden in Kearney County, Nebraska, met to organize a local co-operative association under the name of the Farmers' Co-operative Grain and Livestock Association. This was the third co-operative organization to be formed in the county, following the Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Company begun in 1886 and the Kearney County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company founded in 1892. In January of 1903 the name was changed to Farmers' Co-operative Grain and Supply Company. Its purpose was to buy and sell on commission grain, livestock, lumber, coal, and other farm supplies. J.S. Canaday, president of the Nebraska Co-operative Elevator Association, was chosen as the first president. The company's elevator was finished in August of 1903. In 1946 the company purchased another elevator. The principal business of this organization has always been the buying and selling of grain, although it also deals in feed, coal, and farm machinery. |
